GITEX Series 1/7 · By the FreePass teamGITEX Nigeria 2026 ran from 31 August to 3 September, split across two cities: two days in Abuja, then two days at the Landmark Centre in Lagos. FreePass exhibited at the Lagos leg. The theme was "Beyond Connectivity — The Bridge to Sovereign AI & Innovation." We exhibited, we listened, and we left with a clearer picture of the moment Nigeria is in than any report could have given us.This is the first of seven posts on what we saw, who we met, and what it means for FreePass and for the infrastructure Africa's digital economy runs on.
The theme was the thesis
For most of the last decade, "digital transformation" in Africa has meant one thing: getting people online. Subsea cables landed. Metro fibre went into the ground. Mobile data prices fell. Nigeria now has more than 150 million internet subscriptions, and Lagos alone has thousands of kilometres of state-owned fibre ducts."Beyond connectivity" is an admission that the first job is largely done, and the second job has barely started. Once the bytes reach the country, where do they go? Whose network carries them? Where is the content actually stored? And does the person at the end pay for the data to watch it?That second set of questions is why FreePass exists. So a trade show built around them felt less like a marketing opportunity and more like a room full of people who had arrived at the same conclusion from different directions.
Who came to the stand
We were on the NIGCOMSAT Accelerator stand alongside four other startups from Cohort 3.0, on a platform provided by NITDA through the Office for Nigerian Digital Innovation (ONDI). Over the two Lagos days, the conversations fell into a few clear groups.Government. The Lagos State Commissioner for Innovation, Science and Technology and the Special Adviser to the Governor on Broadband both spent time at the stand. The conversation was practical: how LearnEdge, our education delivery product, could carry online classes for state schools; how the CDN could support live lessons to rural areas; and how zero-rated IPTV could ride on the Lagos State fibre broadband network. Nothing was decided on the show floor, but the questions were the right ones. The exchange. The Internet Exchange Point of Nigeria (IXPN) visited. FreePass has been an IXPN member since September 2025, when IXPN described us publicly as Nigeria's first and only local CDN. Since then, peak domestic traffic at the exchange has more than doubled. That growth is the clearest evidence we have that keeping traffic in-country is not a niche idea.Infrastructure partners. UniCloud Africa, which is preparing to build a network of data centres across Nigeria and other African cities, came to talk about what a domestic CDN needs from a domestic data centre. That conversation has since become a partnership, and it gets its own post in this series. The satellite operator. NIGCOMSAT's own team visited and recorded an interview with us. Our relationship with NIGCOMSAT runs through the Accelerator, where we built SHELTER, our satellite flood early-warning platform. What we discussed at GITEX goes further, into how satellite and IP delivery can share one signal chain. That is also its own post.Investors and advisors. Several firms, including a Dubai-based venture studio, asked the same question in different forms: how fast can this scale, and what does it need?
What we showed
Three things, all live:

SOA (Spirit of Africa), our consumer streaming app, launched on Android in August. Content delivered from in-country edge, zero-rated on partner carriers, so the viewer does not spend a data bundle to watch.

ISP TV+, white-label IPTV for internet service providers, with the set-top box prototype on the table.

SHELTER, satellite-delivered seven-day flood warnings for communities where the network is the first thing to fail.

The most common reaction was not "how does it work" but "why doesn't this already exist." That is usually a good sign.
The lesson NIGCOMSAT's MD took home
After the show, NIGCOMSAT's Managing Director, Jane Egerton-Idehen, wrote that the clearest message from GITEX was: don't rush to go global before you learn how to win at home.We agree, and it describes our sequence exactly. The problem FreePass solves — content leaving the continent and coming back slower and more expensive — is a Nigerian problem before it is an African one. Get it right for Nigerian broadcasters, ISPs and viewers first. Then take what works to Accra, Nairobi and beyond.
What comes next in this series

2/7 — How NIGCOMSAT, NITDA and ONDI put a Nigerian infrastructure startup on the GITEX floor

3/7 — FreePass in Nigeria today: broadcasting, streaming and machine-to-machine data

4/7 — How we are scaling across Africa

5/7 — Africa's digital economy and the delivery layer beneath it

6/7 — Extending Nigeria's Digital Switchover with NIGCOMSAT

7/7 — UniCloud Africa and FreePass: taking data centres inland

Thank you to everyone who came by. If we met and haven't yet followed up, write to hi@freepass.africa and we'll pick it up.

Beyond connectivity: what two days at GITEX Nigeria told us about where Africa's internet goes next

Why FAST Monetization Needs an Africa-First Delivery Model
Free Ad-supported Streaming TV, or FAST, has changed how audiences discover video. Instead of searching through endless catalogues, viewers can lean back and watch scheduled channels for free while advertising funds the experience. For content owners, this creates a powerful revenue stream: package existing libraries into linear channels, distribute them widely, and monetise viewing through targeted ad breaks. In many African markets, however, the opportunity is held back by two practical barriers: the cost of mobile data and the performance gap that appears when content travels through distant infrastructure. ZeroRate CDN Ads Manager is positioned to address both. By combining locally cached content delivery with zero-rated access and ad-management capability, it helps IPTV and OTT providers make free viewing commercially sustainable while improving the viewer experience.
What ZeroRate CDN Ads Manager Does
ZeroRate CDN Ads Manager brings together three capabilities that are often treated separately: content delivery, access affordability, and advertising operations. For IPTV and FAST services, that means video can be distributed through local CDN infrastructure, made easier to access through zero-rated data arrangements, and monetised through planned ad inventory.· Locally cached delivery: Content is delivered closer to viewers, helping reduce latency, buffering, and dependency on long-haul international routes.· Zero-rated access: Viewers can access eligible video experiences without the same data-cost friction that often limits streaming adoption.· Ad-funded monetization: Publishers and channel owners can build commercial models around sponsored access, video advertising, and campaign reporting.· Scalable IPTV growth: Platforms can support larger audiences during high-demand events, channel launches, or regional campaigns.
The Monetization Model: Free Viewing, Funded by Relevant Advertising
FAST monetization works when the viewer, content owner, platform, advertiser, and connectivity partner all gain value. The viewer receives free or lower-friction access to entertainment. The content owner turns programming into repeatable ad inventory. The IPTV platform grows engagement and retention. Advertisers reach audiences in premium video environments. Network and infrastructure partners benefit from more efficient local traffic delivery. For African IPTV and OTT operators, the key advantage is not simply inserting ads into streams. It is reducing the access barrier first, then using advertising to sustain the cost of distribution. That makes monetization less dependent on subscriptions and more aligned with mass-market viewing behaviour. Graphic concept: the FreePass-style monetization loop connects audience access, local delivery, ad opportunities, and revenue generation. How Ads Fit into the IPTV and FAST ExperienceIn a FAST environment, ads are typically placed into scheduled programming breaks, much like traditional television. For IPTV and OTT platforms, those breaks become valuable inventory when they can be planned, measured, and sold. FreePass ZeroRate CDN Ads Manager can support this commercial logic by helping services align ad delivery with channel schedules, campaign goals, and audience reach.· Pre-roll and mid-roll campaigns: Create predictable inventory around live and linear streams.· Sponsorship packages: Let brands underwrite zero-rated viewing windows, themed channels, or event streams.· Regional targeting: Support campaigns that reflect local markets, languages, interests, and distribution footprints.· Performance reporting: Give advertisers confidence through delivery, reach, and engagement metrics. Use Cases for Broadcasters, Telcos, and IPTV Operators
<colgroup><col style="min-width: 25px;"><col style="min-width: 25px;"><col style="min-width: 25px;"></colgroup>

Use case

How FreePass helps

Commercial upside

FAST channel launch

Package existing content into scheduled channels delivered through local infrastructure.

New ad inventory without relying only on paid subscriptions.

Sports or live events

Support high-demand streaming with local caching and sponsored access windows.

Premium ad placements around peak audience moments.

Education and public-interest video

Reduce data-cost friction for learning, training, and awareness content.

Brand-funded or institutional sponsorship models.

Regional entertainment bundles

Distribute local language and niche channels to wider mobile-first audiences.

Advertiser access to clearly defined communities and markets.

(table 1 reference for ZeroRate ADs Manager use case)
Why Local Delivery Improves the Business Case
Monetization depends on viewing quality. If a channel buffers, fails during a major event, or consumes too much paid data, the ad opportunity is lost before it can be sold. Local CDN delivery improves the foundation of the business model by keeping traffic closer to the audience and improving reliability at scale. For advertisers, that translates into more completed views and stronger campaign confidence. For platforms, it means more sessions, more minutes watched, and more ad opportunities. For viewers, it means a smoother free-viewing experience that feels closer to television but works across phones, TVs, and connected devices.
A Practical Go-to-Market Playbook
1. Define the audience: Start with a clear viewer segment such as sports fans, youth entertainment, family content, faith-based programming, education, or local language channels.2. Build the channel proposition: Convert available content into a scheduled, lean-back experience with consistent programming blocks.3. Zero-rate the access path: Work with connectivity partners to reduce or remove data-cost friction for eligible streams.4. Package the ad inventory: Create sponsorship, pre-roll, mid-roll, and event-based ad products advertisers can understand and buy.5. Measure and optimize: Track viewing, ad delivery, fill, completion, and campaign performance to improve yield over time.
Conclusion: Turning Access into Monetization
The future of IPTV and FAST monetization in Africa will not be won by advertising technology alone. It will be won by services that solve access, performance, and revenue together. FreePass ZeroRate CDN Ads Manager gives broadcasters, telcos, content owners, and IPTV platforms a practical way to grow free viewing while creating sustainable ad-funded business models.Call to action: If you are launching an IPTV channel, expanding a FAST lineup, or looking for a sponsor-funded streaming model, FreePass can help you deliver locally, reduce data friction, and monetize audiences at scale.
